Marine

The marine environment is one of the most hostile for all types of construction. Balvac have a wide range of experience of operating within tidal waters and carrying out repair, strengthening and refurbishment projects to jetties, harbours and other maritime structures. Balvac have developed new techniques for the encapsulation and strengthening of pier and jetty support structures as well as protecting steel piles affected by Accelerated Low Water Corrosion.

Available systems include cathodic protection and sprayed concrete. Cathodic protection is the only long-term controllable treatment for chloride induced reinforcement corrosion.

The special circumstances of marine infrastructure often provide opportunities for innovation. Balvac developed a process of grout encapsulation of jetty piles within a permanent shuttering of glass fibre reinforced polymer shells which saved over 50% of programme time and 30% of project cost in comparison to the conventional solution.

Power Industry

Balvac had broad experience in the nuclear power sector having undertaken successful projects at many of the UK ’s nuclear and conventional power facilities over the years.

Completed projects have ranged from detailed visual and exploratory investigations of defects, to the installation of complex steel support systems and other strengthening works. We have a broad portfolio of specialist skills and are able to offer innovative design and engineering packages to provide a top quality service, unmatched by our competitors. Balvac have been involved with a number of framework contracts and phased work packages for leading clients, and so have built up a detailed knowledge of the client’s requirements and also the specific health and safety aspects of working within a nuclear or conventional power environment.
