M6 'Plastic' Bridge
Balvac has played a vital role in the construction of the first ‘plastic’ road bridge on the motorway network. The bridge spans the M6 at Mount Pleasant, near Preston in Lancashire. Working as Specialist Subcontractor for Balfour Beatty Civil Engineering, Balvac bonded 176 FRP (Fibre Reinforced Polymer) units using over 3000kg of Epoxy Resin to form two decks of approximately 26 metres each.
The bridge was constructed on the side of the M6 in a temperature and humidity controlled tent and was successfully lifted into position during a night shift, minimising disruption to the travelling public.
